Analogy notices that two things resemble each other in some respects and infers that they may resemble each other in others. The conclusion can only ever be “this might work”, and its reliability depends on whether the structure relevant to the conclusion is similar — not on how similar the two things look on the surface. It has three legitimate uses: helping someone understand (cash flow as a company’s bloodstream, company policy as traffic rules), suggesting an approach (a hospital checklist carried over to factory maintenance), and testing a claim (checking the key differences when someone argues at you by analogy). Analogy is not a substitute for evidence; a decision that matters has to come back to real data and a small-scale test.

When you argue by analogy yourself: give the conclusion before the analogy, map only the parts that matter, state the boundary out loud, pick a reference the audience knows, and land on an action.
